The Skin Box I feel as though I were stretched Stretched tight over a wooden frame My skin drum-like My head, my limbs, my genitals Strange caricatures, awkward designs, scribbled only as an afterthought Inside, something moves A black beetle! And as I lie, shrinking and cracking in the sun I think, "This then is my fate, to crumble into dust with only a loathsome insect to represent me in the afterlife." - W.A.Davison

Not A Fire Woke inside electric gut came full of fish chills head aflame Mouth on carpet needle enter paper cut-out doll surrounding whole of spindly center Spoke with cloak and leaning headrest dark upon the raven's nest Mouth is open full of branches quickly summon demon armies lying in the trenches Not a fire Wire traps are lying inside corpses rotting side by side Set in rows like teeth you smile when the wind has changed direction only for awhile Woke inside electric gut came full of fish chills head aflame Mouth on carpet needle enter paper cut-out doll surrounding whole of spindly center Not a fire - W.A.Davison/M.Hamilton

Additional notes, Mar. 2022:

"Disembraining Songs Demo - Feb. '94" was the second cassette released on my Disembraining Songs label. I dubbed 15 copies of the tape to take with me to the UK, Winter 1994, while on a mini-tour with Phycus and Monty Cantsin (a story for another day). The tape was given to or traded with people I met while on tour. No more copies were produced after the initial run of 15. The tape is a "split release" but both projects represented are solo projects of my own. All material on the cassette was written/created by me with one exception - the first two lines of lyrics in "Not A Fire" were extracted from a letter written by my friend Mark Hamilton and sent to me sometime in the mid-80s (and that's another story for another day!).

I should also comment on the S.O.T.N.E. tracks on this album. As it says in the original track listing, they are both "live performance backing tracks," which means they are not finished compositions. They're just some sounds created to accompany whatever sounds/actions were happening live. And, as an interesting aside, the "Baron Brainscapes" backing tracks on this tape were never actually used in the "Baron Brainscapes" performances that took place a few years later.

This digital version has been very minimally re-mastered. It's not radically different from the original cassette release but I think it's quite listenable. Bear in mind that the recordings were made on a four-track cassette recorder in the early 90s.

I hope you enjoy the reissue of this rare piece of 90s cassette culture!
